Snow White Movie Review with My Daughter: We Had Thoughts
This weekend, I saw the new Snow White with my daughter Savannah, and afterward, we sat down for one of our classic movie breakdowns. Spoiler alert: we didn’t love it. But the conversation that came from it? Totally worth it.
This isn’t a film school analysis. It’s a father-daughter reaction — real, unscripted, and (sometimes brutally) honest.
👨👧 Bonding Over a Rough Movie
We walked into the theater pretty optimistic. Savannah loves movies, and I was curious to see how this remake would land. She gave it a 7 out of 10 — but immediately said she wouldn’t watch it again. I started at a 7 too, but by the end of our conversation, I downgraded it to a 4. Yeah, it fell off that fast.
🎭 Gal Gadot & Rachel Ziegler: The Hits and Misses
Savannah didn’t hold back when it came to Gal Gadot’s performance: “I think it was horrible.” Especially the singing — which she thought was rough, and I didn’t disagree. The character didn’t bring that strong, villainous presence you’d expect from the Evil Queen.
As for Rachel Ziegler, Savannah mentioned loving her in The Hunger Games, but said something just didn’t click in Snow White. Her portrayal felt flat — not terrible, but definitely not memorable.
🎨 CGI Dwarfs… Why?
We both had issues with the character design. The dwarfs, in particular, looked off — the CGI felt cheap and unsettling. We spent a good chunk of our chat wondering why they went that route when it didn’t add anything meaningful to the movie. It just made things distracting.
🎶 Too Much Singing, Not Enough Story
Look, I’m not a musical guy. And Savannah? Even she said there was too much singing. That says a lot. It wasn’t that the songs were awful — they just didn’t do anything. They didn’t move the story forward or bring emotional weight. They were just… there.
👑 It’s Not Really Snow White
This was a big one for both of us. The story strayed so far from the original Snow White that by the end, we both said it probably should’ve had a different name. It borrowed a few pieces from the classic tale, but the heart of the original was totally missing. It felt more like a vague adaptation than a faithful reimagining.
📉 Final Verdicts
Savannah: 7/10 — but “I wouldn’t watch it again.”
Started at 7, ended at 4 — “Too far off the mark.”
me: 2 – “wouldn’t recommend”
That said, we had a great time watching it together. The best part of the whole experience was just sharing the moment, talking about the film afterward, and joking around about what we’re going to review next. (Stay tuned for that.)
